One thing that my broker allowed was to transfer (with no fees involved) the IRA shares into a Roth IRA. That way if they pay off you have no tax liability on withdrawal of the money, which effectively lowers your basis by your combined federal and state tax rate. And you have the option to undo the transfer until after your 2013 taxes are filed.
