Bolívar state (South Venezuela) dissenting deputy, Américo de Grazia believes that Chinese capital has gradually taken over crucial assets directly linked to basic enterprises in that region.
The deputy rejected the remarks made by congress speaker Diosdado Cabello on July 23, stating that the operations of the state-run Orinoco Iron and Steel Company (Sidor) were being hampered by "labor union mafias." Américo de Grazia believes such remarks "are clearing the path for an important decision." He did not rule out the government might be appraising the possibility of waiving Sidor to Chinese capital.
He argues that currently, "the National Institute of Channeling has 180 employees doing nothing, whereas Chinese companies operate it." This is the case for state-owned iron company CVG Ferrominera.
"That subsidiary of the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana is managed by a Chinese firm, including the iron extraction from the deposit and its shipment to Sidor for industrial processing," the deputy stressed.
The government signed an agreement with Asian transnational Citic group, granting powers to operate Las Cristinas, one of the largest gold mines in Latin America. In addition, the Chinese transnational was entrusted with the task of drawing a mining map of Bolívar state.
