My understanding is that you can choose to write it off whenever you want, but once it's gone it's gone along with the potential for any future return on the stock.

I'm in the same exact situation where I likely will have a large cap gain later this year and the KRY loss would help offset the taxes.  I'm planning on waiting as long as I can to determine which is better: the tax savings or giving up any future KRY payout.
