Tata Motors talking to Electrovaya

By Ritwik Mukherjee Jan 25 2011 , Ontario

Tata Motors is in talks with the Toronto Stock Exchange listed Electrovaya for its
proposed electric car venture. Electrovaya is engaged in designing, developing and manufacturing proprietary Lithium Ion super polymer batteries, battery systems and battery related products for the clean electric transportation. Electrovaya has already teamed up with Hero Electric to help the Indian company move from lead acid batteries, which have a number of limitations, to Lithium Ion super polymer battery. On a global scale Chrysler group has selected Electrovaya as the battery supplier for 140 Ram plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Sankar Dasgupta, CEO, Electrovaya said that they were holding talks with Tata Motors at the highest level. Talks are also on with the Mahindras who have taken over Bangalore-based Reva Motors, he said. Although he did not give any specific timeframe, he hoped that formal associations with Tata Motors and Mahindras might come through very shortly. And it’s not just about supplying Lithium Ion batteries to auto makers, the firm, which also works with Nasa on astronauts’ life support system, is also looking out for joint venture partners to set up production facilities across many parts of the world including India.

“Having one production facility in one particular part of the world is just not enough when you plan to expand globally. One production facility does not make much of a sense-logistically. We are therefore looking for ideal joint venture partners. They can be battery makers, or automobile manufacturers, chemical companies or anyone else. We are also ready to invest part of it,” said Dasgupta.
