Tesla design have a lot of sense, they use highest energy density battery with NCA cathode (ca. 250 Wh/kg), each cell include a fuse and electronic control for safety.

By using relatively small cell they can combine very high energy density for pack and safety.

Pouch cell is available since years and part of Panasonic capability, so they make a technical choice between cylindrical and pouch cell.
