World's shortest universal truck - the EMD 115i, featuring lithium-ion technology

At CeMAT 2011 Jungheinrich was the first manufacturer to unveil a mass-produced lithium-ion truck, and in 2014 Jungheinrich followed suit with a new generation of in-house-developed lithium-ion batteries which require just a 30-minute charging cycle to be ready for a full shift - a quantum leap in energy storage technology. 2016 sees a continuation of this successful R&D tradition with the market launch of more series production trucks featuring lithium-ion technology. These include the EMD 115i high-lift truck with a load capacity of 1,500 kg. The built-in charging device ensures quick and easy charging of the briefcase-shaped,14-kilogramme 40 Ah battery. Designed for use in retail and warehouse settings, the truck embodies Jungheinrich's new design concept, which is characterised by an extremely compact look and a very small turning radius.

As a general rule, industrial trucks equipped lithium-ion technology consume 30 percent less energy than forklifts running on lead-acid batteries. The lifespan of lithium-ion energy storage systems is about three times as long compared with conventional energy storage technology. In addition, the discharge level for lithium-ion batteries is considerably lower. While about 80 percent of the energy is available in conventional lead-acid batteries, for lithium-ion batteries the figure is around 90 percent. In conjunction with the associated higher voltage level this means more power for the same capacity rating. In the context of declining prices for lithium-ion cells on the global market, this translates into even further cost reductions.
