Hewlett-Packard ( HPQ - news - people ) and Royal Dutch Shell ( RDSA - news - people ) announced Monday they are collaborating on a new system of seismic exploration for on-land petroleum deposits using millions of tiny wireless sensors. If successful, the system could vastly lower the cost of drilling and developing oil fields, and also have uses in areas like carbon sequestration and extraction of other minerals.
