Message: The biggest headline signing for Jacksonville

On Wednesday the Chiefs announced they were trading Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins in exchange for five picks. The picks include the first rounder of 2022 for Miami. It came one week after the Packers transferred Davante Adam to the Raiders for a new set of picks. Adams signed a five-year, $141.5 million deal. Hill received his money as well and was awarded a record four-year, $120 million contract that makes him the highest paid wide receiver within Madden NFL 23 history.

Both have the Jaguars to be grateful for.

The biggest headline signing for Jacksonville on the opening day of free agency was luring Christian Kirk to North Florida with a five-year, $72M deal that could fetch as much as $84M If he can meet performance escalators. It was a king's ransom for a player who was always a third-party option for the Cardinals offense. He only earned significant time as an active player in 2021. when he was able to record 982 yards. Affirming their commitment, combined with the requirement to pay a "bad team tax," the Jaguars eliminated the wide receiver market in one deal. Kirk wasn't just 27th in the league for receiving yards this year, he wasn't even viewed as the best receiver among these free agents. So when he was paid as a top cornerstone of the franchise everything changed.

The tenor of the pitch changed. It became clear Green Bay wasn't going to be able to sign Adams on the longer-term deal they wanted leading to his departure. Hill had been engaged in discussions with the Chiefs too, but this time, money was the key issue. You really can't blame either Adams or Hill for this situation. If somebody like Kirk earns $74M with a guaranteed $37M the odds are right that two of Madden NFL 23's top players are worth nine-figure contracts.

It was, quite simply, impossible for either team to bear. With Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes who have signed big-money contracts, it's unrealistic to commit over a quarter of the salary cap to two players -and not without risking the team's other players due to. Meanwhile the shared DNA of Las Vegas and Miami is that they're not spending a lot at the position of quarterback. Derek Carr is at the final stretch of an extension in 2017 that will bring in just over $19 million towards the cap this year, while Tua Tagovailoa's contract is an undrafted contract. Both teams were able to absorb a huge tax hit to a top player under Madden NFL 23's new ballooning pay.
