Message: Reality Check

A couple weeks ago, EEStor put out a “white paper” which attempted to show how a high volume product, like an LED light bulb, used Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors, which would be an easy target for EEStor.

Well, not so fast BK:

I took apart an LCD bulb today. The first surprise was that the “bulb” part was tough plastic. When I hit it hard enough, the plastic globe popped off, with no damage. Exposed on the base was then an LED, which still worked. But anway, there were 3 AEC in it, plus over 20 other components

There was 1 AEC rated at 10 uF, 200 volts, and 2 were 4.7 uF, 35 v. Looking just at the biggest one, Digicom sells them for about 50 cents, so direct, in volume,  would be about a quarter. The closest ceramic I could find was the SMPS from AVX.  That was an MLC made with a 10,000 K ceramic.

Now, that would cost over $100 each, so with EEStors glass-ceramic, with its K about 1000, if a high volume producer licensed it, you are looking at $500 each, rough guess. (And it would be twice the size)
