| DENVER, COLORADO--(Marketwire - Feb. 17, 2009) - Geovic Mining Corp. ("Geovic" or "the Company") (TSX:GMC)(OTCBB:GVCM), is pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara A. ("Barb") Filas, P.E., C.E.M., as Senior Vice President, Corporate Development. Ms. Filas brings to Geovic more than 25 years of experience as a mining engineer on more than 30 major projects on six continents, with expertise in a variety of fields including operations, engineering, social and environmental impact assessment, and regulatory support. Such projects involve a diversified portfolio of commodities including uranium, coal, precious metals, and base metals, yielding a broad knowledge of global mining and resource markets. Moreover, in her most recent role as President of the U.S. business of the global engineering firm Knight Piesold, Ms. Filas served as Project Principal in charge of preparing the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and Environmental and Social Action Plan for Geovic's flagship Nkamouna cobalt project in Cameroon, Africa. Thus, she has been deeply entrenched with Geovic's activities for some time. In addition to aiding the progress of the Cameroonian operations, Ms. Filas will be involved with new ventures undertaken by the Company and Geovic Energy, Geovic Mining's wholly-owned subsidiary exploring other mining and resource projects worldwide.
