Rodney Orr, president and CEO of Golden Band Resources of Saskatoon, said his company would probably be mining gold in Northern Saskatchewan today, but for foot-dragging by federal bureaucrats.
"We might have been in production now, if not for one particular federal department,'' Orr said. "Our experiences with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, or DFO as they're well known, are examples of how the regulations and the ends they are meant to serve can be overtaken by bureaucratic processes.''
Orr cited as an example a one-year delay in getting environmental approval for a tailings pond, which led to the postponement of the entire project.
"How are we supposed to compete as a mining industry world-wide, when we're crippled by regulatory processes that really seem to be more self-serving than serving their mandate?"
