Hey Sketch, the chart below clearly confirms your post on how Goldman maintains their tradition of false claims. In fact, one would probably do quite well if they did the exact opposite to GS's consistently suspect recommendations.

Also, here are a few tidbits on Washington Mutual that I managed to dig up. This is another major bank on the edge of a cliff.

Cheers - VHF

How big is WaMu?

The largest bank failure in U.S. history was Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company. When it failed in May 1984, it had $41 billion in assets and $30 billion in total deposits.

According to the FDIC press release, when IndyMac failed in July it had $32 billion in assets and $19 billion in deposits, making it the second-largest failure in history.

Washington Mutual has $310 billion in assets and $182 billion in deposits. (Their market cap is now below $4 billion.) So think of WaMu as 10 IndyMacs.

Goldman Sachs downgraded Lehman Brothers (LEH) from a Buy to a Neutral today. Yep, they had a Buy on the stock from $46 down to $5. After having a Neutral rating on Lehman from June 2006 through March 2008, Goldman decided to take a chance following the March lows and make a Buy call. It looks like they're throwing in the towel on that call today.
