More Suspicions on Obama Team

It is fun watching the Obama team dance in response to questions involving the suitability of their highly suspect selections. I guess we are to believe the person chosen to run the U.S. Treasury has trouble understanding paying basic taxes but is able to understand much bigger financial issues. Either that or he is essentially corrupt/fraudulent.

Spokesman says nominee is right for job of Treasury chief

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Barack Obama's choice for Treasury secretary made "honest mistakes" related to his taxes and a housekeeper's work authorization, but is the right person to head the department, a spokesman for the president-elect said Tuesday.

Incoming White House press secretary Robert Gibbs made the comments after Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, raised questions about a housekeeper who worked briefly for Geithner without proper immigration papers, and about years during which Geithner didn't pay his own Social Security or Medicare taxes.

"He made a common mistake on his taxes, and was unaware that his part-time housekeeper's work authorization expired for the last three months of her employment," Gibbs said in a statement to reporters Tuesday.

The tax and housekeeper issues were the subject of a closed-door meeting of the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday. The committee will hold a confirmation hearing for Geithner on Thursday.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the committee's chairman, said that the matters were serious but they didn't disqualify Geithner from being Treasury secretary.

Gibbs said Obama chose Geithner "because he's the right person to help lead our economic recovery during these challenging times.

"He's dedicated his career to our country and served with honor, intelligence and distinction. That service should not be tarnished by honest mistakes, which upon learning of them, he quickly addressed," he added.
