I am constantly reading opinions and analyses that are extremely negative about any monetary system that uses "fiat" as a medium of exchange. We are regularly being told to place our confidence in precious metals because the fiat system is bankrupt, corrupt, totally flawed or a combination thereof. It always strikes me as incongruous then when I read the hopes and dreams of fellow ECU shareholders who, like me, would be delighted to receive a big wad of fiat in exchange for our ECU shares. I suppose the unstated next step would be to immediately convert that paper into gold or silver.
