I think the biggest damage to the American opinion on gold came from the 1956 film The 10 Commandments. When Moses (Charlton Heston) went up the mountian, the Hebrews went rabbid demanding Arron make a golden calf idol. That movie reran on the main tv stations every year for 15 years. I think that image is what the public compares us gold bugs too.
