Someone showed my wife an old article which stated the original block of land that their estate came from was sold in the 1700's for 250 lbs of silver. The original land consisted of 1,234 acres on the Chesapeake bay. Currently land prices on the bay vary greatly with small lots up to 1/2 million per acre. Large tracts of dry land ie 300 acres and up in non populated areas on the bay currently go for $10,000 to $20,000 an acre. This means this land would now cost at least $12,340,000. I do not know if the 250lbs was troy or english, but if we use english at 14.583 troy ounces per lb, then the sales price was 3,646 ounces of silver. The current value of silver if it kept up with the real estate inflation would be $3,385/ounce.
