Message: Overall Commodity Damage

As noted below, at this time last year, commodity prices were up during the first week of January followed by 4 weeks of losses. Thus far 2011, it may be shaping up to be the exact opposite.

Also, the FED's POMO activity, absent the last couple of days, will be ramping up to $8 billion per day for the next 4 days. Odds are then pretty good that all boats will soon be rising.

Commodities Not Off To A Good Start In 2011

Conditions are even worse this morning in commodities markets (or better, depending upon your point of view), so much so that the table below that was compiled last night had to be updated again this morning to reflect prices that have moved even lower in recent hours.

Interestingly, a year ago, this sector had an impressive first week of the year with gains of about three percent, but this was followed by four straight weeks of losses that totaled more than 10 percent, the oil price tumbling more than $10 a barrel and gold falling by $85 an ounce. Could this year see the opposite result of a bad first week followed by gains?
