About 40 years ago, it was the recognition of 15+% inflation on everything, not just groceries and recognizing that any savings in the bank was melting away. (Just a personal observation while trying to feed and clothe 3 kids, 2 dogs, mortgage, keeping a car running, etc. Ahh, the joys of early marriage.).
