According to Dan Norcini, the hedge funds spread trade is one of the reasons for depressed mining stocks. He has stated this before many times. Apparently the hedge funds go long on bullion and ETF's and cover the trade by going short on specific miners. I guess ECU is one of the chosen miners. they have been doing this for more than 2 years and will probably continue until it doesn't work any more.
