cockerel1;
Good advice...and I'm with U all the way. A week doesn't go by that I don't add more ECU (in some form).
Unlike some players here, I don't have a "core holding" and a "trading portion"...although it kind of works in a similar fashion, I guess...nothing I hold is too sacred to sell in an emergency, or if sentiment changes.
I have a VALUE allocated portfolio, across say 10 different companies, based on my own estimates of their intermediate-term and long-term VALUE.
If I have $100,000 in ECU.WT and $100,000 in FNV.WT, then I consider them to be EQUAL in VALUE at this point in time. If ECU drops 10% to $90,000 worth, and FNV rises 10% to $110,000 - for no apparent reason - then I consider the balance to be out of whack...
ECU has (in this example) become a 20% better VALUE than FNV!
...so I re-balance my $ holdings, constantly:
In this case, I sell $10,000 FNV.WT and buy $10,000 of ECU.WT to hold equal $ holdings of each company once again. This might not happen every day or even every week, depending on momentum and sentiment; however, in general, I find this to be an effective way to "force myself" to buy more drops and sell more advances...
Yes, I've been buying a lot of ECU lately! Like the price of butter at Shopper's Drug Mart, when it goes on sale...I sometimes buy a whole fridge full!
This works for me, because my wife makes great pies (which use a lot of butter).
ApplePie probably knows a lot about this strategy as well.
