I don't know the answers to your questions. I would guess some of the buying is certainly done and I would also guess that some short funds might short this index.

Below is the house positions for the last 4 trading days which is probably the date of earliest possible known GDXJ changes, it's was more likely some became initially aware of changes on Monday at the earliest.
