I say the change is almost completely due to PMs price change.

Shorters are just reacting to that change and scrambling for safety by covering.

Note that as AUM recovers to where it belongs, it's incresae in price is much higher than that in the precious metals themselves. That is why many say that PM stocks offer greater profits than bullion.
