Actually the golden rock is also covered in real gold, but that is layered on the rock piece by piece with gold leaf - so no it's not solid, but it is covered in a very think lining. Every traveler who makes it to the rock adds to the layer- and every person in Myanmar dreams of making this trip.

It's a fascinating rock though as it's in the middle of nowhere, high up in a mountain and sitting very precariously on the edge of a cliff. Scientists say that the area it balances on is only about 2m square... which makes sitting under it looking up rather unnearving :) The trek up there was a real ordeal, but worth it.
