I think Europe needs bonds and they have enough gold. My personal opinion is that by agreeing to introducte the Euro in the nineties, Germany and the other surplus countries are obliged to accept Eurobonds, whether backed by gold or not. They have been benefiting from the existence of the Euro, so let them pay a higher interest now in bad times.
To be honest, as a European I get tired of this continuous focus on Greece and Spain as if there are no other countries in the world with similar economic difficulties. One thing is clear to me. Trade deficits and trade surpluses in Europe are more or less in balance, so the Euro should not be under pressure. To say that the Euro is gone is the result of lots of misinformation and easy listening.
