"South Africa Seems Content to Die Obediently"
... but it seems the last of the gold bugs refuse to do so, refuse to give in. What keeps them going?
... maybe the same example of the will to live I saw yesterday. I just happened to notice a small, baby Chipmunk in our pool at the last minute. It was going under and kept strugging feebly to the surface. I scooped it out and placed it on the grass where it was racked with shudders and coffing up inhaled water. It shook and quivered on and off for an hour, often laying still as death, shivering intermittently from the cold as water had penetrated it's fur. I covered it with a small blanket and a while later, peaked under it. Bam! It bolted to a tree and was last seen drying high on a sun drenched branch. Remarkable I thought, rewarded by a warm glow that comes with witnessing a creature's survival from near death. I think I'll call it a 'white swan' event. All die hard gold bugs deserve one.
