Strike holding back development

"Greater Sudbury can take advantage of the reviving world economy, but the community must deal with "frog in the soup" first, says a Laurentian University economics professor.
"What we do know is this," David Robinson told more than 40 people at his Outlook 2010 forecast Friday at Bryston's-on-the-Park in Copper Cliff.
"Even if the trend is upwards, the (Vale Inco) strike in Sudbury is holding our development down. We are not going to follow that trajectory until the strike ends ...
"We don't know when the strike is going to end."
In his 40-minute address to members of the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, Robinson said there are signs in the United States, Europe and elsewhere that the recession has ended and commodities will soon be in short supply.
"China and India are in the midst of the biggest construction boom our solar system has ever seen," he said. "That will lead to a surge (in demand) when everything picks up."
That's why a metal such as nickel, even though there is an oversupply right now on world markets, is commanding a rising price: people are putting their money into commodities on the thinking that demand will rise, Robinson said.
Robinson said one of the first commodities that will see shortages is oil. Metals will follow suit.
"We think we are going to make a lot of money holding this commodity," Robinson said, in explaining the thinking of many investors. "Buying commodities is a good idea. Buying Canadian mining companies with assets in the ground is a good idea because assets in the ground are the safest place to put your money."
Robinson said a growth forecast of 8.3% in 2010 and 10.2% in 2011 for China is excellent news for Gre a t e r Sudbury's nickel operations.
"China is the driver of world nickel markets"
