I use Top Stocks for my Palm Pre, which allows you to set it for manual updates. It also connects to Google Finance portfolios, if you have them set up, and you buy the app ($3).

Even the trial has a lot of useful news filtering, although it is all US based. It would be interesting to see if there is a Cdn version available somewhere.
