Interesting Image of the Day

The Ellingham diagram shows the thermodynamic feasibility for iron and chromium reduction to metal at temperatures up to 1500 degrees C with carbon as the reductant. The melting point of Fe-Cr alloy is lower than the melting point of Fe or Cr (1530-1475 degrees C based on the Cr content), it is possible to separate metal from slag with proper chemical compositions at temperature less than 1600 C. (Source: Conversion of Chromium Ore Processing Residue to Chrome Steel, Dec 2007.)

Theoretically, the KWG Gas Super Reducer (GSR) enclosed furnace would reduce a large portion of chromite fines by gaseous reductants before any liquid phase formation.
