ONTC needs to transform - Gravelle

We all recognize the proud history at the ONTC and value to northeastern Ontario. We want to see that tradition continue. However, what seems to be lost on some people is that our government made the decision to move away from the plan for divestment of the ONTC to transformation of its operations and, in doing so, kept four of the five lines of the ONTC in public hands.
Transformation is needed to maintain the services of the ONTC, making it more competitive to secure new business, particularly for the refurbishment service business.
There may be potential in the future for new business through refurbishment of Metrolinx rail passenger cars or private-sector work such as rail tank car refurbishment in con
cert with upcoming federal transportation regulations.
However, any notion that this business will be awarded to the ONTC before they are more competitive is simply false. To have success in attracting any new business, it is critical for the ONTC to present a stronger, more competitive position. I confirmed this reality with Brian Kelly and the General Chairperson's Association in our meeting this past Wednesday.
Our government values and appreciates the work of the union leaders and ONTC employees. Through working together, with a full understanding of the need to transform the operations of the ONTC, I believe that we can ensure a sustainable ONTC that provides transportation services and infrastructure to support economic growth in northeastern Ontario.”
