Dividend Checks Cut In Half

posted on Feb 10, 2009 07:53AM

A friend of my Mother's, who is 78, told me that her dividend and annuity checks were cut in half in December. I am hearing similar things from other retirees, all over 60. They are turning to me, a 33-year old, for advice. But, the problem is that someone who is 78 years old has spent HALF of her life in a totally FIAT, based-on-nothing-but-political-promises system.

I ask them, "have you bought gold?"

Well, the price is too high it turns out. So, I ask them, "If you didn't buy it when it was $500, $600, $700, when would you buy it? So, the problem isn't really price isn't that right?" I tell them that they are looking for a reason not to buy, and that they will either do one of two things. 1. Never buy, and criticize it the whole way up, or 2. Buy near or at the top, and give up more for less.

These and other arguments do not sway them. So, it turns out that they all believe in paper money, no matter how many videos I show them of Glenn Beck pointing to a hockey stick of money printing, or pictures of people in Germany with wheelbarrows of money.

I guess I see why only a few ever make it through to the other side.
