GOLD EXPLORATION - Drill cuts 355 oz Au at KLGold's South mine

ONTARIO - Just when KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD was enjoying the publicity we gave it two weeks ago for drill core that assayed nearly 4 oz/ton gold (Net News, May 14, 2008), it seems the company might be forgiven for gloating over the latest assays from its new South mine complex.

Hole 53-1071 returned an almost-unbelievable 11,806.0 g/t (344.4 oz/ton) Au over 0.3 metre. The core came from a new zone intersected at the 5300 elevation (1,615 metres), and the exceedingly high assay was part of a 3.2-metre intersection that averaged 1,486.7 g/t (43.4 oz/ton) Au. A second zone 2.7 metres farther down the hole returned a modest 36.0 g/t Au over 1.5 metres.

The new zone is characterized by quartz veining and flooding mineralized with visible gold and coarse tellurides, according to the company's press release. The zone lies only 45 metres from existing mine infrastructure.

"The 344-ounce assay over the one-foot interval is the highest drill hole assay in the camp's history, easily surpassing the previous record of 181 opt over 1.0 foot on the Lower D North in drill hole 50-740 reported by the company in September 6, 2006," said Stewart Carmichael, chief exploration geologist. He added, "This zone likely correlates with drill hole 53-1070 located 70 feet west which assayed 15.3 ounces of gold over a core length of 2.3 feet."
