Richard Koo in his book "The Balance-Sheet Recession" warns that the coming US recession the government will have to spend its head off in order to counter-act the contraction that will take place in both the consumer sector and the corporate sector of the US economy. Furthermore, wrote Koo, the government would have to keep up massive spending for 10 years in order to counteract the depressing effects of debt and deflation.
