On Yahoo, there was quite few hopes, that TSLA is going to buy LAC. Eventually, TSLA could have buy LAC, but they do not have money to bankroll a mine development, raw material processing, battery factory, ... It just does not make sense to buy "just" the mine.

Also please note, that TSLA does not produce any batteries. Panasonic does that for them and in China, they also got a supplier.
