Ok, something new. My first thought was... Un Oh! No more Li Ion Energy Storage. Then the second thoughts appeared: What about equivalent cost per unit of stored electrical energy? Is this new method going to be so expensive that only very large corporations can afford to use it? Then again, how long for it to ramp up and be widely available?
Ok, let's just say for the sake of argument that Long Duration Energy Storage makes it to the market and dominates that market. Well, that would be terrific for stimulating alternative energy sources and Li Ion will still be the more practical energy source for transportation and residential and small corporation needs and it will still take energy to recharge those energy sources so the fact that Long Term Energy Storage would itself stimulate greater alternative energy production just means that there will also be more stimulus for EVs, electric planes, electric buses, electric boats, electric fork lifts, electric anything that uses batteries.... Lithium ion batteries. So after thinking about it a little more I am more inclined to think this new development will be a positive for Lithium Ion batteries. If it turns out that the Long Duration Energy Storage units are more expensive for unit of electricity stored and/or too bulky to use in smaller applications or for any reason not practical for the average home owner and small businessman then this could be a blessing for those areas where it is practical and also for Li Ion batteries in those areas where Long Duration Energy Storage isn't practical.... yeah, I know... just my opinion. I need more information to have a better opinion. Will be watching this!!
Bottom line: We obviously need a lot more information about Long Duration Energy Storage in order to get a good idea of what the implications are for not only alternative energy but also for Lithium Ion batteries as well. Make a note to look for any articles that deal with this new Long Duration Energy Storage approach... is it practical, is it even doable or just something theoretical? Lots of ideas have been promoted in the area of Energy Storage for decades that never made it to market.
