DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says a pending breakthrough in battery chemistry will cut the price of its electric vehicles so they equal those powered by gasoline within five years. The technology also will increase the range per charge to as much as 450 miles.

The company’s product development chief promised a small electric SUV that will cost less than $30,000 and pledged to roll out 30 battery-powered models worldwide by 2025. Nearly all current electric vehicles cost more than $30,000.

The announcement Thursday shows how fast electric vehicle technology is evolving and how it may become the primary fuel for transportation sooner than almost anyone believed.

I remember reading so many posts on different message boards not that long ago (almost seems like yesterday ) saying that it would be more than a decade, probably beyond 2030, before the penetration of EVs into the passenger automobile market amounted to anything more than worth a second look because of the dominance of ICE vehicles.   Now, here we are in late 2020 and it seems like every other article from the automotive industry press is featuring an EV or an automotive company effort to switch over to mostly or total EV production or to the expansion of recharging centers throughought the transportation network.

2020 has been a terrible year in many other aspects, not the least of which has been the effects of Covid-19, but as far as the expansion of EVs in their efforts to penetrate the automotive market in general it has been a huge success story.
