Cal,

this is becoming bit more philosophical, should we agree, that new gas power stations are needed to keep the EV dream alive, then quite logical objection is why do we need to build gas power stations and charging stations? Would not it be better to use the gas directly in a car? Burning natural gas in a power station and subsequent transport of energy to your socket, charging and releasing chemical energy effectively eliminate the higher efficiency of an electricity engine. Not to mention, that the infrastructure needed for LPG is already in place. To add extra tank for LPC refueling on current petrol station is relatively minor problem.
Would be the environment be priority, then “gas instead of fuel program” would be able to eliminate the most polluting cars from the streets by converting them to natural gas. Single federal subsidy of $7000 for a Tesla S would be enough to convert around 5-7 most polluting cars into natural gas. The of course we need to check if a street full CNG cars would be less smelly than the same street full of conventional ICE.
To support EV transformation, we need something else than gas powered generators – fusion reactors or at least sizeable amount of nuclear power stations. There is little tiny problem, the earlier does not exist, the latter nobody wants and it takes about 20 years to build one from scratch. Either way, it is important to see, that the “EV revolution” was not ecological nor economical decision. It was purely a political decision, therefore quite fragile.

Anyway, just a philosophical chat, the decision was already made and we are going full speed towards electrification of personal transformation. Next 5 years or so, nobody will really care. Go LAC  :-).
