Thanks, Bassomatic! For those of you who have not read the article mentioned by Bassomatic, please take this as a recommendation to peruse the article. You can find it today easily by searching the link I noted in an earlier post, but I don't know if that link will be helpful later on. The article was written by Daniel Rothberg.
I am not generally a fan of "Journalists", but I have to openly admit my admiration for the effort Mr. Rothberg executed in providing "both sides of the story". His piece is not overly pro LAC nor is it overly pro effort to block the Thacker Pass lithium mine. He simply tells the story according to viewpoints of both sides of the controversy.
I was impressed by both sides.
Jon Evans had some interesting comments and the article made me more aware that it is because of the opposition to the Thacker Passs lithium mine that LAC's response has undergone sequential modification in order to ameliorate the objections to the mine. Evans and LAC seem to be adjusting their response to community objections in an ongoing fashion with a definite conciliatory manner in view of the goal to achieve community recognition of LAC as that "Good Neighbor" Alexi Zawadzki has publicly proposed as the commitment for LAC.
Some examples of Evans in that article:
The company says it remains focused on workforce development, and Evans wants economic benefits to go to tribal members. More than 40 tribal members have applied for jobs, he noted.
“We have ongoing dialogues with members of the tribe,” he said. “We’re committed to offer jobs to folks who want them and to offer the training required to be successful in those jobs as well.”
I particularly noted that figure, mentioned by Jon Evans, of "more than 40 tribal members have applied for jobs".
The tribal population of Fort McDermitt is something like 320, according to information for the 2020 Census. So, if I only use the number 40, instead of some number "more than 40", it comes out to be 12 1/2 % of the tribal population of Fort McDermitt that have applied for jobs with Lithium Americas for a future LAC mine at Thacker Pass. And that involves applications made before construction has even been started at Thacker Pass.
I am not trying to paint the article as one sided, since it addresses very well the specifics of the objections raised against the building of the mine at Thacker Pass.
The article in the Nevada Independent by Daniel Rothberg is one of the best articles on the controversy surrounding Thacker Pass, if not the best, that I have read. I do hope that everyone who participates on this Agoracom Hub will take the time to avail themselves of the opportunity to read it and to thank Bassomatic for drawing attention to the article.
