Totally agree with that conclusion, Cal.  As in so many controversies in life, the answer lies somewhere in between the two extreme positions.  It would be fool hardy, down right "Stupid!", to abandon completely fossil based fuels when we have so much of this resource in reserves.  It would also be "Stupid!" to lock ourselves optionless into alternative energy sources when there are definitive limitations on those resources when measured up against the total energy needs of the world for the present and, especially into the future. 

The sane approach is to use a combination of fossil based fuels and alternative energy resources for now and into the future. 

The balance of one against the other can, and will be, adjusted according to the world's total energy needs, but locking ourselves in one extreme or the other is nothing but Folly.  Of course, there is nothing to prevent goverments and societal pressures from well meaning, but short sighted, environmentalist groups to travel whole heartedly along the Highway of Folly that they propose. 

No matter how hard the try to erase it there remain individuals, governments and non-governmental organizations that have firmly tatooed on their foreheads the word:  "Stupid!"
