Life of the licenses

I`m wondering if licenses have a specific/limited life span or are the for the remainder of the patents` life.

My hope is that since there are no royalties, they should be term and renewal would bring in future revenue stream. I can`t see this being a one time deal. I know from my own experience when I purchase software license it typically needs renewal.
