You passed over the real meaty aspect of this, IMO.  You're right, he could go to work anywhere (and be paid a LOT anywhere).  Would he board this ship if he weren't absolutely convinced the MMP patents were valid?  No way.  His credentials, and he's convinced.  Comforting....
