Acorn Technologies Inc. isn't looking to spin off the innovations of its portfolio companies, preferring to develop licensing revenue
AT a time of ever-tightening venture funding, a new company in Pacific Palisades has an alternative -- licensing. Privately held Acorn Technologies Inc. seeks to license patentable ideas and participate in the profits that are generated. Acorn was formed in 1998 by R. Stockton Gaines, a former Rand Corp. researcher and venture capital consultant, and Alvin Despain, a USC professor.
With more than $10 million in private financing from the likes of Peter Norton, the company now owns in more than 20 patents. Though it is yet to see a dime of revenue, Acorn recently acquired Palo Alto-based Intellectual Capital Management Group, a respected IP consulting group. With patents being issued all the time, Acorn wants to be the conduit between development and marketing.
