I didn't read that post the same way you did.  I thought that what she was saying is that while there's a possibility we could lose this thing, she is preferring to be optomistic rather than pessimistic.

Her references to life's tradgedies was merely an illustration that anything can happen, but dwelling on the negatives accomplishes nothing.
