That fits with my (ignorant) interpretation - vary together IN PROPORTION.  I don't get where they say varying together "requires" a 1 for 1.  And I think Ward's analogy picks up on this, and snubs the 1:1 "requirement".

As we pick away at this stuff, I feel better and better!
