As one who works for one of the 900 lb gorillas of the internet world (Cisco), I have personally seen many buyouts we undertook where they either failed completely, or just ended up using a sliver of technology they had. Of course there were many buyouts on the other side where they enabled us to fully integrate and better sell solutions too.

The fact is that CEO's must take risks, or they fail - and sometimes do anyway.
