I grew up in the 50's and 60's where the abbreviation was a racial slur. Whether the dictionary accepts "Japs" as a abbreviation, is of no relevance to me. My uncles and fathers friends served in the 100th battalion and 442 infantry and fought and lost many lives in WW11 and the Korean conflict. I've lost friends in Viet Nam and in Iran/Irag/Afghanistan.
