LONDON — Toshiba Corp. has licensed the Cortex-M3 microcontroller from ARM Holdings plc (Cambridge, England) for use in automotive applications, according to ARM.

Automotive standard infrastructures such as AutoSAR (Automotive Open System Architecture) and JasPar (Japan Automotive Software Platform Architecture) are helping to move the automobile towards 32-bit microcontroller architectures, ARM said.

The Cortex-M3 processor achieves performance of up to 1.25 dhrystone MIPS per megahertz a processor of fewer than 40,000 gates complexity, ARM said. This design also integrates a number of system peripherals to support critical control tasks.

"The open nature of the ARM platform and tools, coupled with specific safety-robust IP, enables us to deliver the solutions our customers are demanding for the next generation of vehicles," said Yutaka Murao, Senior Fellow, System LSI Division, at Toshiba Semiconductor, in a statement issued by ARM.
