MUNICH; Germany — Infineon has licensed MIPS' new 74K core family. According to MIPS, Infineon is the first semiconductor company to license the new architecture that the IP vendor introduced in May.

MIPS claims the cores are the industry's first fully synthesizable processors to exceed 1 GHz in TSMC's 65-nm process.

The news is not a big surprise since Infineon traditionally powers its wireline communication chips with embedded MIPS processors. In contrast, the company's wireless products use ARM architectures.

Infineon acknowledged the 74K licensing agreement with MIPS. However, the company did dot elaborate in which kind of applications it intends to use the new processor.

MIPS positions the 74K core with its enhanced DSP capabilities for communications applications. Unlike existing solutions, the 74K core IP is designed to work with standard cells, memories and EDA design flows, thus speeding up time-to-market and cheapen applications.
