Freescale to use AMD's graphics technology in i.MX processors
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has taken a lot of heat for its $5.4 billion acquisition of graphics chip maker ATI Technologies last year. But the deal is starting to pay off.
AMD has said the graphics technology gave it an avenue to sell more chips to laptop makers, including Toshiba Corp.
And today, AMD will announce a licensing deal with Freescale Semiconductor Inc., which will use some of AMD's graphics technology inside its i.MX processors. The chips will be used in portable media players, portable navigation devices, home electronics products and automotive "info-tainment" applications.
No financial terms were announced, but AMD said the deal bolsters its claim that "thrilling graphics and attractive user interfaces are driving growth and revenue throughout the wireless industry."
AMD said it has become the leading supplier of media processor chips for the hand-held computing market since the acquisition of ATI.
