Thank you. It seems our local legend about his cannon being buried around here is wrong, since, per the write up/history, it was abandonned in the Sierra Nevada in 1844.
A little side-note re: General Fremont. He was a much "bigger deal" in CA than most people realize. When I was in college (Chico State), a buddy and I would take little road trips all around the area. We once found a '69 GTO in an open barn, and my buddy picked it up for a whopping $600! (still has it, restored, recently insured and they wouldn't insure it for less than $84K!). Anyway, back to Fremont.... On one of these drives, we stopped at a historical marker (we stopped at all of them, both being history buffs). There was nothing around but ag fields, and this marker. The marker said something like "Somewhere in this field is the grave of General Fremont, first President of California". WTF?! Apparently, after his successes against the Spanish, he proclaimed himself President! I'm sure there's a lot more to that story. But this was the wildest historical marker I've ever read.
And BTW, as I prepare to watch Antiques Roadshow on PBS, a few weeks back a guy was on that found a 1850's light Howizter half buried on his property here in CA. Amazing....and very valuable.
Thanks again,
SGE
