The star on the left awards 1 star, while the star on the right represents 5 stars. The one in the middle represents 3 stars, etc.

If you only gave one star by clicking on the first star on the left which represents one star and this person had a 3.6 rating, you took the rating down because 1 is less than 3.6. If you click on the star on the right which represents 5 stars, you would have raised the users rating.
